Servus Edmonton Marathon Ambassador : Meet Laurie!
We have selected eight enthusiastic runners to be the friendly faces of the 2019 Servus Edmonton Marathon! They will be sharing race updates and training tips to support and inspire our running community along the way. Learn more about them– meet Laurie!
Laurie Hynes is a former couch potato turned middle-of-the-pack runner. Born and raised in Ontario, she drove out to Alberta, searching for greener pastures in her early 20s and has stuck around ever since. She has lived in Edmonton for nearly a decade now with her partner, rambunctious rescue pup Jeff Bridges, and two cats. Laurie loves libraries, ice cream, teen fiction, and is currently training for her fourth half marathon.
What distances/ types of races have you participated in since starting running?
I started out with a 5K colour run which was a great first race. Nothing too serious and so much fun! Since then I have run a ton of road races; my favourite distance is the 10K. This year I’m racing my fourth half marathon.
What time of day do you like to run?
I am not a morning person so I avoid early runs at all costs. I work shift work, so when my schedule allows for an afternoon run, I jump at it.
What are the top three songs on your running playlist?
It varies, but right now I’m really digging anything by Lizzo (particularly “Truth Hurts” and “Tempo”). Old stand-bys include The Arkells’ “Leather Jacket” and Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Cut to The Feeling”. I’m a sucker for anything super poppy.
Any running books/podcasts you would recommend?
I work in a library, so whenever I start something new, I always search out a ton of books. My favourite running books are Running Like A Girl by Alexandra Heminsley, and The Happy Runner by David and Megan Roche. I love hearing the stories of runners who are more like me, who maybe don’t look like traditional runners, and so I quickly fell in love with Kelly Roberts and her Run, Selfie, Repeat podcast.
Where could we find you outside of work?
Usually lounging at home or going on long walks with my dog. I also love hanging out on 124th Street and going on adventures in the river valley.
You run as a form of transportation and have been car-free for 8 years now: how was the transition into commuter running?
Being car-free has been an interesting journey for me. I am super lucky to live less than five kilometres from my work. Over the last few years, I have been splitting my commute between public transit and cycling (weather dependent). This year, I started to add running as a mode of transportation. I typically will save my runs for my commute home, as I work with the public and I doubt they would want to smell me after a run. I run with my small hydration backpack which helps me carry all my stuff back and forth–plus water.
Name a few of your favorite points along the Servus Edmonton Marathon course, why do they stand out to you?
That final turn back onto Jasper Avenue is my favourite; you know you are coming up to the final stretch and you have to crank up the intensity. Also, the community of Oliver always has amazing cheer squads which can help keep you going.
Of all the places you have travelled to run which was your favorite spot and why?
I have been lucky enough to run in both San Diego and Seattle. San Diego was my first half marathon and I will never forget it. Seattle was equally amazing and I fell in love with the city and its running community.
The toughest thing about running destination races is often I’m training in much colder temperatures than I will be facing on race day as I usually travel in the spring. I will focus on both outdoor winter runs plus working on treadmill with some layers. My biggest piece of advice for anyone racing and travelling is to bring the ingredients for your typical breakfast or plan to stop at the grocery store when you arrive. It’s nice to have something familiar and your stomach will thank you.
Do you have a favorite piece of running related advice you would like to share?
Find a running friend who is at the same level as you and sign up for the same race. I would never have made it through my first year of running without my running bud. It’s nice to have someone to share your highs and lows with.
