Kelowna’s premier running event attracted over 2300 participants from eight countries over Thanksgiving weekend for the 24th annual SunRype Okanagan Marathon. Cool temperatures and a bit of drizzle made for perfect running conditions on Sunday.

The weekend’s events included the 5K, 10K, half marathon and full marathon, as well as the popular Running Room Friendship Run. Participants enjoyed the scenic course that navigates along Lake Okanagan and meanders through residential streets before returning to City Park. It’s one of Western Canada’s flattest and fastest Boston qualifying courses.

Cosette Lemelin of Edmonton was the first female finisher in the marathon with a time of 3:06:31 and Calgary’s Curtis Sampson won the men’s category with a time of 2:52:59. A brother and sister team from Summerland, B.C. took the top spots in the 5K—Keagan Ingram clocked in at 16:26, while his sister Tayla finished in 20:24.

The 25th edition of this event will be held October 19–20, 2019, with the two-day Sports Expo opening race weekend on October 18. The new date takes the event to the weekend following Thanksgiving, allowing organizers to access and assemble the resources that go into the safe execution and success of the event. It’s a perfect way to cap off the fall running season!
