Man Versus Nature

Running is beautiful in its simplicity. All you need is a decent pair of shoes and some simple athletic clothing, and you can run anywhere, anytime, and at any pace. No need to pay a team fee, buy expensive equipment, or sign up for any private clubs.

As I jogged eight kilometres this fall evening, I ran past many living rooms with glowing tubes, people cocooning inside immersed in their medieval fantasies, their mass media realities, or their armchair sports.

I didn’t need to partake in these dramatic amusements tonight—maybe another night. For tonight, I chose my own drama: my feet pounding on hard city streets, my legs burning with exertion, and my lungs inhaling crisp fall air.
