RRAC Interview: Meet Natalia Mack!

Over the next few months, we will be featuring Q & As with our sponsored RRAC (Running  Room Athletic Club) athletes. Today, meet Natalia Mack!

Years of competing: 10+ years

When did you start running: 2008/2009

Biggest accomplishments to date: 3/6 world major marathons completed; Boston 2x, New York, Chicago (all finished in 3:16 or less, all finished within top 20 of Canadian females).

Occupation: Pharmacist

Do you have a favourite race?
New York Marathon

What are your favourite pre-race and post-race meals?
Pre race: Pasta with meat sauce and lots of cheese and Gatorade.
Post race: Rare steak, mashed potatoes or fries and asparagus and beer.

What is your favourite way to rest and recover?
I really enjoy going out for my post race meal with my friends and family right after the race and talking about the day. Enjoying time away from training by catching up on books or Netflix, eating lots of food and just bumming around.

Tell us something not many people know about you?
I was born in Poland, English is my second language.

What advice would you give to someone considering taking up elite running?
Listen to your body, eat enough calories to maintain your fitness and manage your time with a schedule.

Who in the sport today do you look up to?
Honestly, the people I train with! And of course Kipchoge–he’s legendary.

Favorite season to train in and why?
Fall. It’s not to hot, not too cold, and the colours around me are beautiful.

If you could have anything running-related named after you, what would it be?
Probably a running clothing brand of some sort.

What do you to compliment your training?
Weight training and socializing with my training buddies.

Could you recommend a running-related book or movie that you have found influential?
The book Born to Run  and I am about to read Endure, so we will see how that goes. Also, the movie 5 Minute Mile.

Race morning routine?
Wake up and eat Vector with water. If it’s cold, drink hot water; if not, drink at least 1L of regular water right after breakfast–change and go.

Do you ever take on an alter ego persona during a race/close to the finish when you need a boost of motivation?
No. I am usually really out-of-body during my races. I just reflect on my training, try to take in the experience I am in and think of all the people who motivated me along the way. In those world major races, there is so much entertainment around me, it’s hard to lose motivation.
