We have selected eight enthusiastic runners to be the friendly faces of the 2019 Servus Edmonton Marathon! They will be sharing race updates and training tips to support and inspire our running community along the way. Learn more about them–meet Sean!
Hey folks, My name is Sean Freeman. I was born in Mississauga, raised in Calgary and moved to Edmonton 10 years ago. I think my original plan was to just be here for a few years for a change of scenery but, a few years back, I finally admitted to myself that I now call Edmonton home. I mean, how could an Oilers fan survive in Calgary? However, my wife in from Australia, so maybe that could be home too… who knows? Another story, for another time.
By day, you can find me on a sales floor, but in the wee hours of the morning or in the evening you can find me on one of Edmonton’s amazing pathways or exploring the urban forest, hunting for the next secret trampoline in the River Valley.
I really got into running around March of 2018. Since then, it has been non-stop exploration of everything Edmonton has to offer for a newbie runner! For me, running is a form of therapy. I know that is a cliché, but it happens to be true. It’s an amazing tool to clear my head and to let go of my day-to-day stress. When I’m training, I listen to music which gets me into a different space (no music on race day, though). I put on a little electronic dance for the tempo runs or some rap music for the slower, longer distances. Nothing feels better.
I was asked if I had any advice for runners just getting started. My advice would be short and sweet: Edmonton’s running community is outstanding! Join one–or all–of the groups this town has to offer; explore the city with like-minded folks. Whether it is November Project Canada, Need for Speed, Run Collective, Wildrose Runners, Croissant Club, or Running Room’s Run Club–they all offer something different. The one thing they do have in common is their inclusivity. They will welcome you with open arms or a very crisp high five.
Last year, I was fortunate to be a part of the Servus Edmonton Marathon Ambassador program as well. Originally I had signed up for what was supposed to be my first half marathon, but due to some training restrictions, I dropped down to the 10K distance. It was still my very first race! I had so much fun, the race day experience was incredible. My absolute favorite part was running down the middle of Jasper Avenue with the empty streets and tall buildings. After that, I knew that I wanted to run again this year. I wanted to come back and conquer my original goal of the half marathon.
So far this year, I have run a MEC 15K, the St. Albert Road Race 10 mile, the Calgary Half Marathon and most recently, the Lululemon 10K. I feel like I’m ready! I don’t know about you, but I am so excited for race day with all the hype and emotions. It’s an incredible event, I hope to see you out there!
