We have selected eight enthusiastic runners to be the friendly faces of the 2019 Servus Edmonton Marathon! They will be sharing race updates and training tips to support and inspire our running community along the way. Learn more about them–meet Megan!
My name is Megan McManus, I am originally from Leduc, Alberta but I moved out to Victoria, BC six years ago. I recently graduated from the West Coast College of Massage Therapy and am currently preparing to write my licensing exams. After my exams I want to work with high performance athletes and professional teams. You can find me running the full marathon again this year, going for my Boston qualifying time. Outside of work you would find me either running along the ocean on Dallas Road, at the gym, cooking up a storm in my kitchen, trying out the new craft beers on rotation at the Drake, or playing crib on the patio with my partner.
My first year running the Servus Edmonton Marathon was 2018 and I really liked the first 10-12km. You get a really great view of the river valley as well as time in residential areas. The 30km mark is also memorable for me as it is where I had to drop out of the race last year due to an injury. This year, the 30km mark is on my radar and I look forward to getting past it and experiencing the last 12.2km of the race!
In 2018, I was running the race with my Dad and we were both trying to qualify for Boston. My qualifying time would have put both of us through for our age division times. I knew at 12km that this was not going to be my race. Leading up to the event, I had a reoccurring pain in my right hip flexor and knee and it caused me to miss some crucial long training runs. I was very doubtful leading up to the race, so my mental game was not in it either. Around 13km my knee started causing me pain and when I saw my partner and my Mom at the half-way point, I was really struggling.
After halfway, our pace started to slow drastically and my Dad told me that it was okay for me not to finish if it meant I would avoid injury for the next few months. He had been in that position before; he pushed through an injury once and finished with a torn adductor tendon and was off running for almost two years as a result. I didn’t like the idea of not finishing but my Dad was right–and I also wanted him to finish his race strong and make up some time.
The volunteers kindly got me transportation to the finish line where I was able to make it in time to watch my Dad finish. Nothing serious ever came from the injury: it was just a combination of inflammation in my body, improper training, and self-doubt. In the end, I am glad that I listened to my Dad and pulled out when I did because It meant I was able to get back at running and training again within a month after the race.
I was incredibly disappointed after dropping out of the race last year. However, it was a great learning experience for me. I made a lot of changes for the better after the 2018 Servus Edmonton Marathon. I switched up my training program and started working full-time with a running coach. My training now includes more mileage and run days a week, but it is not as intense as the 3 Key Run program I was on before. I have also started a strength training program with my coach that is specific for running, I think that inconsistency in my strength training was what played a big part in my injury last year. I have made some changes to my day-to-day diet–limiting inflammatory foods and making changes to race-day nutrition. I have been working really hard on correcting my running form to avoid the knee pain at my iliotibial band insertion and that has made a huge difference. Lots of growth has happened over this past year, and I am so excited to bring it all to the table for the 2019 Servus Edmonton Marathon!
