Servus Edmonton Marathon Ambassador: Meet Carolyn!

We have selected 10 enthusiastic runners to be the friendly faces of the 2018 Servus Edmonton Marathon! They’ll be sharing race updates and training tips to support and inspire our running community along the way. Learn more about them- meet Carolyn!

How many years have you been running?
One and a bit.

Why do you run?
I started running to see if I could do it. As a former hockey player, I always thought skating was infinitely easier than running. Once I finally got into the groove and succumbed to the addiction of how you feel post run, I was hooked.

What advice would you give someone who is training for a race for the first time?
If you set yourself a goal and don’t accomplish it, you still attempted it and that’s really all that matters.

How would you describe your running playlist?
Electro/Pop (Daft Punk, Sia, Lorde) meets Psychedelic Rock (Tame Impala, Jefferson Airplane) meets Brit Rock (Kasabian, Florence & The Machine, Fleetwood Mac), meets 2004-2007 Kanye.

What other forms of fitness do you enjoy?
Yoga and tennis.

Why should people run the Servus Edmonton Marathon?
It’s a lot of fun! It’s awesome to have a marathon in our own backyard, so why not go for it?

What is your favourite route to run in Edmonton?
I mostly stick around Mill Creek Ravine as I live right near it. Another favourite is along Saskatchewan Drive past Emily Murphy Hill so I can ogle at all of the houses I will never afford.

What is your favourite distance to run and why?
7k and longer. Last summer, I was trying to beat my PR every 5k race I ran, and I did! But now I’m slowing down and trying to do longer distances instead of speed training so I can run my half marathon without (probably) wanting to die. Slow and steady doesn’t win a race, but it sure helps you finish it.

Where is the coolest place you have ever run?
My husband and I did an 11k run around Canmore and the back trails and it was gorgeous. Also involving glorious houses I can’t afford.

What’s your guilty pleasure?
Eating peanut butter by the spoonful.
