Servus Edmonton Marathon Ambassador: Meet Laurie!

We have selected 10 enthusiastic runners to be the friendly faces of the 2018 Servus Edmonton Marathon! They’ll be sharing race updates and training tips to support and inspire our running community along the way. Learn more about them- meet Laurie!

How many years have you been running?
I am just coming up to my five year run anniversary.

Why do you run?
I run to calm my mind. I have an anxiety disorder and running helps me keep things quiet and under control. I run as a means of transportation, as I’ve been car free for around 7 years. I run for fun and as a way to explore my city.

What is your favourite distance to run and why?
I adore 10ks! It’s a distance that is still challenging for me, but one that I can still have fun with.

How would you describe your running playlist?
Mostly top-40 and filled with boy bands. It’s rounded out with 80s and 90s hits, because you can never hear enough Salt N Pepa.

What advice would you give someone who is training for a race for the first time?
Be gentle and kind with yourself. Running and training is never a straightforward process. Some days slogging through a few kilometres will be tough and other days you will be able to hit your paces easily. Don’t take it too seriously and have some fun.

What other forms of fitness do you enjoy?
Walking with my dog and biking. I’ve also recently gotten into Aquafit and it’s a blast!

Why should people run the Servus Edmonton Marathon?
It’s such a fun and fast race. It’s such a great morning, alongside smiling runners and joyful spectators.

What is your favourite route to run in Edmonton?
The river valley is so beautiful! It makes me actually forget in living in the city.

Where is the coolest place you have ever run?
My first half marathon was in San Diego. It was a huge race along the water.

What’s your guilty pleasure?
I read vast amounts of teen fiction. Want a sweet summer read that takes you back to your awkward adolescence or something angsty set in a dystopian world? I’ve got you covered.
